Description
For your consideration is a FABULOUS DINNER PLATE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007). It has a very nice Jamon Zogan rope impressed pattern which, in this example, is a pattern I refer to as Carpenter's Cloth. This is one of Shimaoka's most frequently use rope impressed patterns. The center medallion has a tenmoku stylized plum blossom, also a frequently used design motif. This plate was originally purchased in 1983 directly from Shimaoka at his studio by Tracy Whiteside, a potter visiting Japan. There are no chips or cracks. It is signed with his later cypher that has a curved tail. The box lid is also signed.
This is a fairly large piece at 9 1/4" (23.5 cm) Diameter x 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) Height. (Photos 6 - 12 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka, David Leach and David Cuzick). (C - #3)
